A Bright Idea

So lately I have noticed Edison Bulbs everywhere I go… maybe it is because I am in love with them or because they are “all the rage”.  Or is this just a resurgence of a timeless classic? The funny thing about it is that in the last couple of years a lot of media has focused on the phasing out of incandescent bulbs and legislation surrounding this issue. In fact, many countries have already phased them out completely – Brazil and Venezuela and the United States has passed legislation to phase them out completely by 2014.

Phase them out! How could they?! Because they are energy suckers. Real bad. Inefficient little monsters with both the heat they generate and the energy they use up.

And so even though I am in favor of more efficient sources of energy and conserving and having long lasting bulbs… there really is nothing like the light and look of an old fashioned Edison Bulb.

There is a gastropub in our part of town that we used to go to a lot (before being preggo and the munchkins came along.. ) called The York I think I may have mentioned it before on this blog. This is where we first fell in love with the Edison Bulbs – the low glowy light, the bright glowing filaments, the old fashioned – authentic feel of it… here is a terrible photo of the edison bulbs at The York:

Now a days you can find these bulbs in lots of design stores, West Elm, Anthropologie, and CB2. They are pricier than regular bulbs and they may not last nearly as long… but they sure are purty…

We recently bought one for our geometric glass pendant light over our dining room table – from CB2. So far I haven’t taken any photos of it…but it is perfect!

We bought some similar to picture 1 for our dining room chandelier (the glass link from West Elm) and sadly we’ll have to only put them in for dinner parties because they are just too dim for regular old everyday use.

I did LOVE them when I saw them though.
