Building a Banquette
Are you the type of person who prefers to sit in a booth when you go out to eat? Me too. There is something cozy and comfy about sitting in a booth that I so prefer to a traditional table. When we originally looked at our house for the first time (about a year ago in February!) I thought that our kitchen was perfect for a built-in banquette – for that cozy eat-in kitchen feel. Months before we even got the house I was researching where we could buy and already made breakfast nook…
Like this one from Ballard Designs, it’s part of the Coventry Collection and it comes in all kinds of configurations:

Or on the cheap, these ones from Home Decorators Collection (each less than $500 for the whole set)

But when I started measuring the space we had, none of these took full advantage of the corner configuration we have (it’s on the small side, so every inch counts!).
Solution? We are having a contractor build one custom for us! Here is the mess that is our current space:
Those are our dining room chairs pushed into the corner to simulate a “rough idea” of measurements for the new banquette.
Everything is in disarray right now because we have been tiling our kitchen backsplash over the last two weeks and had to move everything off of our countertops. Stay tuned for a later post about that project!
Some ideas for what we love!

It will probably resemble this one when all is said and done. The back has to be low because of the window on the right side. Ours will be stained to match the color of the cabinetry and will have some custom cushions made for the seat and back to make it comfortable (plus storage underneath the seat!)

Sometime soon I’ll be navigating the world of fabric once again in deciding what the cushions will look like!
